I feel like I haven't written in days! I hope the links worked so everyone could see my fotos. I changed the font color so everyone could see better, I had complaints! Let me know if the white is better.
My week went by pretty quick. I have one more class in an hour (last for 2 hours), and then I am done for the weekend. Classes are good, but there is going to be a significant amount of work. They are big on presentations here...which I don't like to do in Spanish!! As of right now, my favorite class is History of the Caribbean. My teacher is from Cuba, and he speaks very clear, good speed, and he pronunciates. I am also in volleyball class with an outdoor court (not sand), which is interesting. My teacher is a crazy man. He speaks mumbled and under his breath, which is hard when we are outside with lots of noise. He was rambling on about how we needed to wear black shorts and a university logo t-shirt. He was trying to make everyone pros in one day, really annoying. He didn't ask me for my name, but continued to address me as 'bella,' the Spanish word for beautiful. That was really annoying. He also kept asking me questions and pointing me out as the American in the middle of class, which is full of Dominicans so I would get nervous. My other class is Political Processes and Socio-Economical problems of contemporary Republica Dominicana. The teacher is really nice, and I can understand everything she says, but the workload is heavy. Spanish class is fun, we got to write scripts for a short conversation between two people yesterday. Sarah and I wrote ours about a boy and a girl who were dating, then she left him for the man that has an empanada vender cart. It was pretty funny. I have my community service class today for the first time, so I will let you all know how it is.
Last night, a group of us went to El Fogon, a bar right next to campus. They call it Building #5 (there are 4 buildings of the same name and this one is the fifth) because all the students go there. It was karaoke night and don't worry, I didn't sing. We didn't get home until 2 though, so I am really tired today. I guess I'll take advantage of la siesta :)
Random things that I found funny/interesting: If something is cool here, they say 'que heavy' like how heavy in english. According to most dictionaries and every Spanish textbook used in the states, a 'bolsa' is a purse. However, here they use it to mean the sack for the testicles. Thank goodness I didn't lose my 'bolsa' before I knew what that word meant! A bunch of people died laughing when our director, Lynne told us that because they were using that word on a regular bases. haha. Avocado's here are huge! They are about size of a cantaloupe, which is crazy.
Things are really great here. My mom and I have really intense conversations (for hours) about politics, people, cultures, and life in general. It's great to be able to do that in Spanish, it really gets my mind working. My Spanish was a bit rusty, but better now. Give me one more week, and I think I will be back to normal. I am just happy to understand the teachers and my family :) I pay much more attention to the teacher here than I do at home.
This weekend I may try to go to the beach. I think we are going to Sosua's beach. You all have my cell number if you want to chat! Enjoy your snow day (everyone in Illinois),hahaha.
